The original intent was to take a 1980s Truckee vacation home and transform it into a modern farmhouse that seamlessly merges with the Tahoe forest surroundings. Our goal was to create a light and open design where all the spaces interact. The main floor encompasses a screened porch, allowing for outside dining and social interaction in summer. The family gathering room above the garage creates another space for the entire family to interact indoors. The kitchen layout enables guests to partake in the culinary experience. Special features of the kitchen include an Urban Cultivator for growing microgreens. A large island creates a space for cooking and dining. Reclaimed barnwood countertops ground the kitchen to its farmhouse roots, counterbalanced with modern glass tiles and quartzite island top.
One of the best ways to “build green" is to take existing inefficient real estate and transform it to an efficient home. The high efficiency boiler runs the radiant heat and domestic hot water system. A heat recovery ventilator provides a constant flow of fresh air throughout the home. Extra attention to air sealing caulking and insulation made for a tight building envelope. In addition, the exterior wood finishes are locally sourced and milled incense cedar. Interior pine flooring and bar tops and benches were locally sourced and hand milled. Kitchen and family room ceilings are hand milled lumber from local beetle kill pine forests. Low VOC paints and caulking were used throughout the home.
